Girl Scout

ROSCOE – Ashley Sherwood graduated from Harlem High School with high honors last week. She spent most of her free-time sleeping the last month, the result of a bout with mononucleosis. Even so, she finished her last year at Harlem with a 4.0 grade point.

Sherwood was the recipient of two scholarships: The Harlem School Foundation and the Kris Leix Scholarship. She also received the Senior Visual Arts Award and the Girl Scout Gold Award.

The prestigious Gold Award is the highest achievable award for a Girl Scouts.

Scout Leader Louise Glon said the Gold Award requires 85 hours of service. Sherwood was able to procure donated text books for Native American students on the Fond du Lac Reservation in Wisconsin and for students in Nigeria. A church in Nigeria turned an old bus into a mobile library stocked with the books.

The Gold Award is open to girls currently in high school. The award challenges young women to change the world. Recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Sherwood takes great pride in being a member of Mariners Girl Scout Troop #3361. She has been active in scouts off and on since kindergarten. The Mariners troop is open to girls in 7th grade through high school. There are currently 30 to 40 members. Mariners are not your ordinary Girls Scout Troop. The emphasis is on sailing and water activities.

“Being in Girl Scouts is considered ‘not cool’ to some girls, but I would do it all over again.” She said. We are involved in sailing competitions that involve Girls Scouts as well as Boy Scouts

Our troop we went to Alaska last year on a girl-run ship, and went sailing on the Stars and Stripes (an Olympics boat) on Lake Michigan.

Fund-raising is part of their mission as well. This year’s Easter Egg Hunt at Cross and Crown Lutheran Church on Elevator Road in Roscoe was a benefit for a Native American girl to help her with school supplies and cultural activities.

“Ashley is a hard worker. She is vice president (Bo swain mate) of the troop this year,” Glon said.

Sherwood will be attending Rock Valley College in the fall, majoring in General Education. She is considering attending Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville to study marketing and advertising

She has designed t-shirts, badges and flyers for the troop.
