ROSCOE – Para-professional Librarian Laurie Evans has taken the Accelerated Reading Program at Roscoe Middle School to a new level. This year, like the previous two years, Evans has encouraged the middle school students to read by participating the school’s Millionaire Club.

As soon as the students come back to school in August, they begin keeping track of how much they read during the school year, through a special computer program that keeps track of how many words each participating student reads. Kids in sixth through eighth grade can participate.

They are tested after finishing each book.

All RMS students are required to be in the Accelerated Reading Program as part of their language arts grade, but joining the Millionaire Club is an option.

Each teacher makes a goal for individual students. “Some students go far and beyond their goal,” Evans said. Three students did just that this year.

Seventh grader Josey Finocchiaro read 7,499,323 words. Another seventh grader Haley Hamilton was right behind her with 7,293,030. Rachel Manning came close with 6, 946,968 words

Evans and her students celebrated their success with a breakfast of doughnuts and juice from McDonalds on Tuesday, May 24.
