South Beloit will have to try to get a handle on the type of offense they want to run this season. Watching the Sobos play during the season-opening Pecatonica Thanksgiving Tournament, it can be said the pieces are there. South Beloit has a handful of talented shooters. Height is a concern only to the extent of second-chance opportunities. Riley Robertson is listed at 6’5 Andrew Radke and Eddie Quince are listed at 6’2. Guard play should highlight the path to success for the Sobos.

In the winter sports opener South Beloit fell to Pecatonica 53-43. It was a game where the Sobos seemed to take control with a nearly double-digit edge at the half. A win could be waiting, but it wouldn’t be achieved for South Beloit until night three.

A third quarter where the Sobos opponent, Pecatonica, scored 23 points in the third quarter sealed its fate in the opener on Tuesday, Nov. 22. They had the lead after one quarter10-7 and increased it heading into the half, 24-15. Things didn’t come together as well for South Beloit in the second half as they fell late. Dillon Hagstrom led his Sobos with 17 points. His shot was on and his step towards the rim was quick. The baseline opened. The Senior’s success was mostly first half oriented. By the break he had twelve points in the books. Hagstrom scored ten of those twelve in the second quarter alone. Antonio Hickman also had a solid showing in the Tuesday night opener. The Senior scored eight points between the second and third quarter. When Hickman was shut down in the first and fourth quarters, teammate Adam Pliz covered the gap. He ended the night with nine points scored. Troy Walmer scored seven points in the loss. Hagstrom found his groove early as he helped South Beloit top the Belvidere Sophomore-representatives on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 40-30. The season mark moved to 1-1 as the hunt for a possible early-season tournament title existed into Monday, Nov.28.

On Monday, South Beloit faced North Boone. A win over the Vikings will move the Sobos to 2-1 in the tournament and a chance to catch the Warriors. Warren is 3-0 and holds the lead currently. They can secure top honors Tuesday, Nov. 29 if they handle Hagstrom and South Beloit in the 6 p.m. game. Walmer scored five points in the win over Belvidere as Eddie Quince added four. Santana Hernandez and D’Andre Dogan added three points each. Also scoring in the Sobos ten-point win over Belvidere were Hickman, and Riley Robertson.
