Combining efforts continues to be the path most followed by the Athletic Department at South Beloit High School. So far, that success has transferred to great nights of basketball for Sobos’ faithful. There is traveling involved, however.

This Friday night, Jan. 20, both the boys’ and girls’ teams play in Elgin at Harvest Christian Academy. The Lady Lions are a school similar in size to a team like Stockton. They make for a good match up and a good idea of how solid the opposition will be. The drive there though is a little busier. The Northeastern Athletic is a large Conference for the area it serves. Frequent travels are a regular occurrence. When schedulers determined the best path to follow, the one they chose often involves finding ways to work with the basketball program and not just the individual team. They combine the efforts.

Following this Friday night’s game on the road, Chicago Luther North plays a Conference match at South Beloit this Saturday, Jan. 21. The Wildcats are another smaller school, playing in the vastly-spacious Northeastern Athletic.

An important road swing pushes off at Arlington Heights on Friday, Jan. 27. It will be another example where the boys’ and girls’ teams share the floor. A trip to Elgin the following night is lined up for South Beloit. Westminster Christian is a frequent host of many post-season IHSA events, such as volleyball and basketball tournament play. It serves one of the top-five most populated cities in the state of Illinois.

A comfortable home stretch begins for the South Beloit athletes on Monday, Jan. 31, as Alden-Hebron stops in for a bit. The boy/girl double header precedes a Wednesday, Feb. 2 boys’ game against the “lately-more dangerous” Stillman Valley Cardinals.” Conference games against Illinois Math and Science Academy on Friday, Feb 4 and a Feb. 6 match against Mooseheart end the home stand and send the Sobos out of the Conference for a game at Oregon on Feb. 14.

On Feb. 17 the boy’s regular season ends following completion of a game against Aurora Christian. The boys start the second-season in the Rockford Christian Class 2A Regional, beginning Monday, Feb. 20. The Lady Sobos begin the State Basketball Playoffs the week of Feb. 6 in Byron. The winner from Byron moves on to the Princeton Sectional for a chance to take the next step towards a possible State Title at the Oglesby-Illinois Valley Community College Class 2A Super Sectional on Monday, Feb. 20. Byron is the defending Class 2A State Champion. If South Beloit wants to get a solid, post-season win streak going, they might have to deal with the Lady Tigers first.
