Sophomore Olivia Lewis can’t seem to get out of her own way when it comes to the triple jump event in Harlem girls track and field.
During the recent Huntley Invite, she twice broke a Harlem school record she owned in that indoor field event. She first established a new mark at 11 a.m. Then she added a few inches to the distance two hours later. The new Lady Huskie standard now is 35 feet, 7 inches.
Contrast that with the 34 feet, 11 inches she leaped in the spring of 2016, when she appeared in the state meet as a freshman.
Team-wise, the Lady Huskies scored 77 points that were good for a second-place finish at Huntley.
The boys team also was there with another returning state qualifier, senior Jayvious Johnson, winning the 60-yard hurdles in 8.20 seconds and taking second in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 52.84 seconds.
He competed at state in the 110-meter high hurdles last year as a junior and was the only Huskie underclassman at the meet.
Meanwhile, Harlem’s long line of throwers was a presence at Huntley, showcasing Justin Brackett, who took second in the shot put with a toss of 51 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Jake McKenna finished seventh at 47-feet even.
In girls basketball junior Megan Johnson qualified for sectionals and came within an eyelash of going to state in the 3-point competition.
