Throughout the 2017 lent season, St. James Catholic School hosts Fish Fry Friday every Friday.

“We serve a Lenten fish fry every Friday until April 7, the week before Good Friday,” Kelly Hritz, St. James Catholic School volunteer spokesperson, said. “That will be our last one. We serve from 4 until 7 p.m.”

Not only does the fish fry give Catholic worshipers a place to eat red meat free on Fridays, but it also helps St. James Catholic School raise funds for advancements in the school.

“The fish fry is a fundraiser for St. James Catholic School. It is run by parent and student volunteers,” Hritz said. “We have been trying to build a new science lab. The money we raise will be used for that.”

Plus, the Friday Fish Fry’s bring the community together under one roof for the entire Lenton season.

“It has turned into a great community event. It has brought the school, the parish, and outside community together which is really nice,” Hritz said. “We average about 350 meals each Friday.

The St. James Catholic School Friday Fish Fry offers more than just fish.

“We have self-service lines with all-you-can-eat codfish dinners and a variety of entrees. We have baked and fried fish, mostaccioli for vegetarians, mac and cheese, French fries, vegetables, salad, coleslaw, and a choice of one dessert,” Hritz said. “We always have a lot of different desserts. They are store-bought and donated by parents. Pies are by far the most popular item we get.”

The dinner is open to the public. The cost is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors 60-years-old and older, $7 for children 5-years-old to 12-years-old, and free for children 4-years-old and younger. Seniors who come between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. get an additional $1 off. Take-out meals are also available.

St. James Catholic School is located at 320 Logan Ave. in Belvidere.
