DURAND – The Durand School Board met on Monday, June 8 to discuss their plans for the summer and the assistance they will need in order to perform operations as the education process continues for some students and in some cases, some instructors will also continue their training.

During Executive Session, Trustees determined the staff that will be assigned to assist during het summer session.

Lisa Istad and Sue Szymanski were selected to assist during the next few weeks at a rate of $25 per hour. Gail Polizzi and Linda Medley were hired as summer aides.

Heading into the 2015-2016 school year, some of the leadership positions on the sports fields will also notice an adjustment in their compensation packages, according to information available from Monday night’s meeting of Trustees in post-regular meeting operations.

Head Football Coach Dennis Schwab will see a step adjustment of 6-to-5, with the salary adjusted downward from $4,698 per season to $4,312 per season. Head Volleyball Coach Molly Kinney is expected to realize a step from 4-3 on the pay scale with a drop from $4,312 to $3,930. Steven Schulze, Head Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach will see his salary rate start at base one with a compensation package adjusted from $3,593 to $2,943. High School Fall Cheerleading Advisor Tracey DeMarco will step down from level 4-3 and a rate of $2,301 to$1,869.

The Durand School Board is taking the action in an attempt to restructure the available revenue for optimal operations.

In regular action, Trustees received a report from Superintendent and Elementary School Principal Kurt Alberstett regarding his projects and area of focus with summer session just beginning.

“I held a Digital Learning meeting where a Vision for Technology was developed for the staff; I also held a Writing Curriculum workshop to help develop a more cohesive Common Core aligned program. I also conducted the last Strategic Planning Meeting where a District vision was developed along with a District Goal and Key Strategies.”

Alberstett further reported that he attended the A.L.I.C.E Training in DeKalb with Junior High and High School Principal Michael Leskowich and Activities and Transportation Director Pete Robertson.

Leskowich reported to the Board that he and his administration have been working on the final evaluation of the school handbook, with all relevant changes submitted to the Board for their approval.

The “outside-of-the-box” thinking continued for Leskowich as he worked with a State Agency to produce information designed to save lives.

“On May 19, the Illinois Liquor Commission gave a presentation to our Junior High on the dangers of underage drinking. I attended a Vision Planning meeting and a 1:1 Technology meeting as well.”

Leskowich further reported that student progression had occurred without a hitch.

“Eighth Grade promotion was held on May 21, followed by an eighth grade dance and a sixth/seventh grade dance. Graduation was held on May 17. The ceremony was well attended. I want to send out a big thank you to everyone who helped make the day special for the seniors and their families.”

The Durand School Board exited executive session following their regular monthly meeting and will meet again, in regular session, on Monday, July 13 at 6 p.m.
