Boy Scout Joseph Reece, age 18, performed community service for the Belvidere Fire Dept. as his Eagle Scout project. Coordinating with Firefighter Chad Cunningham, Joe determined what the BFD needed, and put in the time and effort to get the work done.

“We’ve always had a bench out front of Fire Station 1,” said Fire Chief Al Hyser. “The old bench was in a bit of disrepair and we took it in for the winter. But people like to come and sit on that bench, a couple will come by daily even in less than ideal weather and sit there. There has been a bench there all of my 23 years here and who knows how long before that. It’s almost iconic. Thanks to Joe, we now have a new bench out front. The bench says, ‘Belvidere Fire Department, Est. 1886.’

“Joe also went to Fire Station 2 [353 E. 6th St.] and took down some evergreens that have been there since 1974 and planted grass. This is in preparation to have a fresh landscaping look out there. We will plant
