Garden Prairie firefighters raise the flag for their pancake breakfast fundraiser.

On Sunday, March 4, Fire Station 2 in Garden Prairie hosted their popular annual pancake breakfast.

“We do this every year for the community of Garden Prairie,” said Firefighter Brian Block of Fire District 2. “We usually have 500 to 600 people turn out for our pancake breakfast. It runs from 7 a.m. until noon and is donation only. We serve eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, and applesauce along with coffee, milk, or water.

“We use the funds for equipment and this breakfast. We have purchased some new grills to make it better. We do a golf outing to raise money for scholarships. We also sell donuts at the Boone County Fair and hold a 5K race in September.

“It’s nice to cook for the community. They can meet the whole gang of volunteer firefighters and know we are here to serve and protect,” said Fire Chief Kent Hulett. “We have 28 volunteers here today, but it might change. We still have to provide coverage in case of an emergency. Belvidere would help us out if needed.

“As chief, fundraising efforts are a big deal. I appreciate what our community does in support of the fire department. What we raise saves the taxpayers money. The events allow us to
