The Belvidere Fire Dept. has new games and activities as well as old favorites for everyone to enjoy at their open house. Sparky the fire dog will also be back for the event.

The Belvidere Fire Department is planning their annual Open House on Sunday, Oct. 7 to kick off National Fire Safety Week. This year’s theme is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” Look for fire hazards. Listen for the smoke detector. Learn two ways out of every room. Flyers for the Open House have been distributed throughout District 100 schools.

National Fire Safety Week is held the first full week of October. October was chosen to be National Fire Safety Month because Oct. 8 to 10 was the time of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.

BFD Captain Shawn Schadle said, “The purpose our Open House is to:

– Showcase and demonstrate our capabilities to our citizens who employ and count on us.

– Distribute our safety materials and messages in a fun atmosphere.

– Further our mission to be ever-present and deep-rooted in our community.”

The BFD’s Open House will begin at 1 p.m. with an Opening Ceremony performed by the BFD Honor Guard. Guests will be able to see the new fire engine and all the life saving vehicles and equipment. You will have the chance to meet the firemen, hold and try out a fire hose, and adults will be able to learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

A giant bounce house will be on site and free ice cream and granola bars will be available. You can hang out with Sparky the Fire Dog, watch demonstrations of firefighters in action, and tackle the firefighter obstacle course. The firefighters have been very busy building new activities and games for their Open House to make it the best one yet.
