The Light Your Fire 5K runners paid no attention to the cool drizzly day and came out to support the Boone County District #2 firefighters.

“The Boone County Fire Protection District #2 Women’s Auxiliary created the run six years ago. The auxiliary is made up primarily of wives and girlfriends of District #2 firefighters but it doesn’t really matter,” said Michelle Dixon, event coordinator. “We do this for the Boone County District #2 Fire Association. We are a volunteer organization and our firefighters have responded to 426 incidents this year – fires, accidents, medical calls, etc.

“Will Run for Donuts” is our theme this year in respect of the District #2 donut stand at the Boone County Fair – the men’s biggest fundraiser. The donuts for today were donated by Edward’s Apple Orchard and Canteen Vending donated granola bars and water. It is wonderful how many sponsors we have that are supporting this event.

“We collect for District #2 and the OSF St. Anthony Medical Center Burn Ward. Today we have 145 runners pre-registered. We usually average 200. We go to local businesses and ask for donations and sponsorships.

“We have been blessed with good weather for five years and today we have a bit of a drizzle. That won’t stop our runners. Our firefighters go out and stop traffic so the runners can pass across streets safely. Steve Summers of 95.3 The Bull was on hand to announce the start of the race. Dan Holmes set up his equipment and live-streamed 95.3. The Overall winner of the event, with a time of 21:04 was Armando Garnica of Rock Falls.
