BYRON – Temperatures around the state line sizzled with heat indexes between 100 and 110 on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, during the Metal Meltdown Drags at Byron Dragway. That didn’t stop an estimated crowd of 20,000 from showing up as the Meltdown proved to be more of a sizzle than the heat.

Metal Meltdown is an attraction that has only been in place for around five years, yet has grown immensely in popularity during that time. Melt Meltdown holds events at different venues around the USA and features hotrods, dragsters and other vehicles from the year 1964 and before. It’s a family event and gathering that just brings people together in a festival type atmosphere. People come from all over the United States and even from some foreign countries to attend.

Vendors come from all over too. If you need parts for your antique racing machine you might find a way to procure some here.

Part of this culture is also to have ladies dressed in classic pin-up fashion, from the 40’s to the 70’s. These ladies dress in fashion and look so pretty. See picture of pin-up girl Miss Cassandra Hicks from Greer. S.C. She attended the 2014 Meltdown Drag also. Definitely something that catches a guys eye. On Saturday there was a contest for the best pin-up girl.

Mostly though Metal Meltdown is about those roaring mean metal machines that rip down the track in sound-deafening motion. There’s something about the roar of the engines and the pure speed that can turn a casual observer to a person bitten with the Meltdown Drag bug. It’s happened to me, and at least one of my photographers, too.
