DEKALB – The Belvidere North High School varsity boys cross country team won first place at the Sycamore Invitational hosted by Sycamore High School at Afton Forest Preserve in DeKalb.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the varsity boys cross country team competed in the 91 degree heat, under the blistering rays of sun, and dense humid weather.

The invitational consisted of a three mile race between 14 teams including: Aurora Central Catholic, Belvidere North, Burlington Central, DeKalb, Dixon, Geneseo, Hampshire, Kaneland, Rochelle, Rock Falls, Sterling, Sycamore, Vernon Hills, and West Chicago.

“The course is on narrow grass trails,” Belvidere North Cross Country Coach Troy Yunk said. “It was very hot and humid.”

Despite the heat, Belvidere North had several athletes finish with impressive times for such an excruciatingly hot day. Not only that, but Belvidere North managed to take home the victory with an overall total of 67 points.

Much of the win was due to the impressive performance from first individual finisher, senior Eryk Yunk, who finished with a time of 15:46.8, compared to the last place finisher, in spot 164, who finished at 32.18.9.

“Belvidere North was lead by Eryk Yunk who was the individual champion and had five runners in the top 27 to win by seven over state ranked Kaneland and Vernon Hills who is also ranked in the top 10 in Illinois Class 2A,” Belvidere North Cross Country Coach Troy Yunk said.

The overall team winner of the invitational was determined by the top seven finishers on each team.

The top seven for Belvidere North included senior Eryk Yunk in first with a time of 15:46.8, followed by senior Elijah Walker in sixth with a total of 16:25.2, sophomore Alec Scott in 13th with a time of 16:53.7, senior Max Vittore  in 20th with a time of 17:29.5, senior William Palmer in 27th with a time of 17:47.0, senior Ignacio Avila in 42nd with a time of 18:15.8, and junior Jake Martocci in 45th with a time of 18.22.0.

Belvidere North also had four more athletes complete the race ranging from 58th place and 150th.  These athletes included senior Logan Bice, senior Nick Noel, senior Xavier Gomez, and junior Ethan Hodzic.

These results were all timed and recorded by Real Timing Inc. to ensure accuracy in such a stiff competition.
