ROSCOE – It was unprecedented on Saturday, Oct. 24, as three teams from the Du-Pec Hornets football teams participated in the championships of the Northern Illinois Football Conference. The Hornets had teams in the flyweight, lightweight and heavyweight divisions playing for division championships.

It all started off at noon that day with the flyweight Hornets team matching up against the Rockton/Roscoe Indians. It was a hard fought game with the Hornets coming close in the game of inches, but coming up short, as the Indians scored a touchdown with 15 seconds left in a scoreless battle to win 6-0. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Hornets with many of the boys shedding a tear after the game. Hold your heads up boys you fought well and hard.

The Hornets fared better in the other two championship games as the lightweights came back from a 21-8 fourth quarter deficit, scoring two touchdowns, to come up with the win in a squeaker, 22-21.

The heavyweights then won their game in the last two seconds by scoring a TD and winning 14-6.

As Meatloaf once sang, “Two out of three ain’t bad”.

It was a great day for football and the Du-Pec fans showed up in force with at least 30 vehicles tailgating throughout the day. There were tents set up and tables of food set up by the fans. The energy could be felt on the Du-Pec sideline.

Knowing what these teams have done now, there is an optimistic future outlook for things to come for the Hornets teams. There was some great football played that day, with each game a thriller.

Congrats on the super seasons!Du-Pec FB 10
