SHIRLAND – Charles Raymond Preiss, 91, of Shirland, Ill., died at 1:55 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016 in River Bluff Nursing Home, Rockford, Ill.

Born Sept. 25, 1924 in Gibbs, Missouri to parents William and Mary Preiss. He graduated from Brashear, Missouri High School. Served in the U.S. Navy from April 4, 1943 to Jan. 16, 1946 on the U.S. Pensacola in the Pacific Theater. He married Sheryl Mace on Nov. 25, 1950 in Rockton, Ill.

Charles moved to Rockford in 1946 where he was employed at National Lock Co. as supervisor until its closing and served for 50 years on their Credit Union Board. Charles was also employed at 1st National Bank and Amcore Bank until his retirement.

He was a member of Walter H. Graham American Legion Post #332 in Rockton, Ill., Shirland Fire Dept. for 31 years, Shirland Board for 18 years and was a committee member for Boy Scout Troop #653. He attended Shirland United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife, Sheryl Preiss; sons, Ronald (Patsy) Preiss, Steve Preiss; daughter, Susan Binger; sister, Helen Nichols; grandchildren, Kelley (Jeff) Lower, Bethany Preiss, Adam (Amanda) Binger, Ross Binger, Michael Preiss, Erica (Matt) Anklam; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Evelyn Bunch.

Funeral ceremonies took place at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, at Shirland United Methodist Church, 8030 North St., Shirland, Ill., with Pastor Mark J. Meyers officiating. A visitation was held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral Saturday. Burial followed in Shirland Township Cemetery, Shirland, Ill.
