BELVIDERE – With the harsh, brutal winds and the fierce cold still raging through the Belvidere/Boone County area, everyone is becoming more restless and eager for spring to arrive.
After another snowfall this past week, people are hoping more than ever that they will not have to wait long for the snow and ice to melt, so their grass can grow once again and they can enjoy the sweet aroma of spring.
Until then, the people of northern Illinois must endure shoveling the heavy snowfalls and bundling up every time they want to go outside.
While they wait, there are a few activities that can keep them occupied until the warmer weather graces Boone County. Even more activities are available to the youth of the community to keep them busy until the weather breaks.
One of those activities is the Junior Bowling league that Concordia Lanes, located at 1205 Logan Ave. in Belvidere, hosts each week, twice a week, for area kids to enjoy.
The youth bowling league features divisions for any aged youth bowler looking to improve their bowling skills.
With each round of bowling come top bowlers for each age category. This week was no exception to that rule.
The first set of bowlers to top out the chart came on Saturday, Feb. 13.
The youngest bowling division, the Cookies and Milk, saw one bowler top the high scorers chart with a high game of 77. The top bowler was none other than Cora Jones, who has graced the high scorers list in the past.
In the next category, the Bantams, Mason Kahl and Andreas Robles both made the top bowlers list yet again. Kahl made the list with a high score of 95 and a series of 165. Robles made the list with a high game of 96 and a series of 156.
In the third division, the Preps, three talented bowlers topped out the list with high scores and high series.’ The first top bowler in the category was Chad Morgan who scored a 201 with a 458 series. Jackie Van Fleet also made the list with a high score of 131, followed by Jessica Plodzien who topped out with a high series of 289.
The last category, the Junior/Majors league, had three top bowlers as well. The first bowler to round out the chart was Joe Gallagher who scored a 224 game with a 566 series. Following closely in second place was Greg Suthers who scored a 211 game with a 584 series.
In the top spot for the girls was Rachel Nelson who scored a 201 game with a 567 series.
The high scores continued into Monday night, Feb. 15.
In the Cookies and Milk category, Noel Capadanno, yet again, made the list with a high score of 82.
In the Bantams division, Draivin Wright continues to do well with his high score of 82 and a series of 154.
Also scoring high for the Bantams was Addyson Blume who topped out the Bantams high scores with an overall game total of 83 pins and a 154 series.
For the Preps, only one individual topped the list making a comeback after not being on the high scorers list for a number of weeks. The young man is Matt Turnipseed who topped the chart with a 138 game and a 328 series.
In the last division, the Junior/Majors, Morgan Dawley made the list again this past week with an even 200 game with a 497 series. Jumping ahead, to top all of the high scorers was Logan Blankenship who scored a 214 game with a 565 series.
With games like these, these children are sure to go far in their bowling careers.
