Sunday, Aug. 21, was a glorious sunny day in northern Illinois. It was a perfect day for the Poplar Grove Airport’s 44th Annual Walk-In, Drive-In, Fly-In for breakfast and camaraderie with other pilots and flight enthusiasts.

Poplar Grove Airport is well suited for such events. It is a modern airport with amenities such as an airframe shop, engine overhaul shop, and accessory overhaul shop.

Poplar Grove Airport was voted “2015 Airport of the Year” by Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics.

Local high school students, athletes, and Poplar Grove Airport workers helped out at the breakfast and fly-in event. Poplar Grove Lion’s Club members cooked the breakfast, which consisted of pancakes, scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage links, biscuits and gravy, juices, and fresh fruit.

The staff for the breakfast event all had high spirits while serving and cooking the food for the Poplar Grove Airport visitors.

The fly-in event also featured vintage biplane rides through BiplanesRides of America, owned by Ted and Kim Davis of Brodhead, Wis. Visitors could get the feel of the wind blowing in their faces as the rode in the open cockpit of the restored 1920s biplane.

Other special events included tours of the museum and the bomber bingo, where a grid was laid out on the field, and a pilot dropped a bag of flour from the plane onto the grid that matched up with raffle ticket numbers sold through the Belvidere Rotary Club.
