The North Boone Lady Vikings found themselves in a difficult situation as they opened the Class 2A Girls’ State Basketball Playoffs.

As February began, the IHSA Selection Committee met and issued seeds for the state tournament for game play beginning Monday, Feb. 6.

The Vikings didn’t have to play on Monday, their eight-seed designation put them directly into the Byron Regional Semi-Final and a showdown with Big Northern partner and four-seed Oregon. That match was played on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Details from this game were unavailable at the time of press.

It is thought, as the unfortunate events of the moment may indicate, the eight-seed designation issued to the Lady Vikings could assure their opening round action might be the last they see in the post-season. The Lady Vikings were 1-10 in the conference this season and carried a 4-21 mark out of regular season play.

Their opponent, Oregon, finished with a 3-7 mark in the Big Northern but a much more respectable 12-16 overall mark. They were favored to knock out North Boone in their opener.

If the Lady Vikings did pull off the upset on Tuesday night they advanced to the Class 2A Regional Championship against the survivor from the early game played on Tuesday.

Game play will most likely come to an end if North Boone does win, for they will have to face Byron for the Regional Crown. The Byron Lady Tigers have proven throughout the regular season that they aren’t one to beat.

With that said, the North Boone Lady Vikings, most likely, are looking at the end of their winter season and already starting to move on to spring sports such as track and field and softball.
