Another Saturday, another busy day for Harlem’s boys and girls indoor track teams.
Both the boys and girls teams competed in the state meet at Illinois Wesleyan University, with the Lady Huskies taking third in the 4-by-400-meter relay race with a new school record time of 4:07.01. The team was made up of freshman Hannah Bilodeau, junior Bailee Blecker, senior Kahleea Washington and freshman Aaliyah Haun.
Also at state for the girls senior Olivia Lewis was sixth in the triple jump, clearing 36 feet, 3 1/2 inches, while senior Katie Fare was seventh in the shot put, with a toss of 39 feet, 11 1/2 inches.
Junior Cloey Fare was 11th in preliminaries for the 60-meter hurdles, in 9.30 seconds, but did not reach the finals.
For the boys, senior Nick Ngo was 14th in preliminaries for the 60-meter hurdles, with a time of 9.68 seconds. He didn’t advance to the finals, either.
There were more than 100 teams competing at the state meet.
Cogdal Relays
Meanwhile, the Lady Huskies had a large contingent of participants for the Cogdal Relays, also March 23, at Illinois State University. They come home with five first-place efforts, with Zakia Buchanan and Michaela Day running 1-2 in the 60-meter dash, clocked at 8.24 and 8.30 seconds, respectively.
Others winning their events were:
* Breanna Sheldon, 1,000-meter run, timed at 3:15.10. Katie Perkins was sixth, in 3:34.57, while Miranda Marocco was ninth, at 3:47.45.
* 4-by-200-meter relay, consisting of Buchanan, Sierra Schaffer, Tessa Appelgren and Day. Their time was 1:15.96. Harlem had another team in this event, which took 12th.
* 4-by-800-meter relay, made up of Alyssa Kuehne, Ingrid Alcala, Faith Procopio and Sheldon, clocked at 10:23.54. Harlem had a second team in this event, which finished fourth. Members were Alexis Kuehne, Emily Zammuto, Marocco and Tara Ryan.
* Katie Fare in the shot put, with a distance of 39 feet, 1 inch. Aulana Muhammad was fourth, at 31 feet, 9 inches; Emma Rich took seventh, at 29 feet, 4 inches. Katie Suhr finished 18th.
Harlem had a number of second and third-place finishes in both the track and field events.
The 4-by-400-meter relay team took second in a time of 4:29.29, with members Sheldon, Day, Zammuto and Haun. A second team in this event, consisting of Kaylin Reese, Schaffer, Bianca Wren and Kenya Gibson, was 11th.
Brynn Schlaht was second in the pole vault and Appelgren was third, even though each one cleared 7 feet, 2 inches. Schaffer came in second in the long jump, with a distance of 15 feet, 6 inches; Stamper was fourth (15 feet, 2 inches); Hailey Lange was ninth (14 feet, 3 inches); and Sophia Sheffield was 17th.
Stamper finished third in the triple jump, clearing 31 feet, 1 inch, with JaMiya Myles in 14th place. Reese went 4 feet, 10 inches to place third in the high jump; Haun and KeKe Bailey tied for seventh, at 4 feet, 4 inches, and Elizabeth Nelson was 13th. Procopio was third in the 1,600-meter run, timed at 5:49.04; Alyssa Kuehne came in fourth, at 6:07.06.
Also in track events Stamper took ninth in the 60-meter hurdles, clocked at 12.01 seconds; Zoei Watts was 13th, Mandy Castle, 16th; and Emma Rosales, 17th. And the SMR 1,600-meter relay team came in eighth, with a time of 5:07.53. Members were Wren, Watts, Sheffield and Ryan. In this race, participants ran one leg of 400 meters, two legs of 200 meters each and a closing leg of 800 meters, totaling 1,600 meters.
