Offense continues to be an issue for Harlem’s football team, but the defense and special teams carried the Huskies to a 23-0 win over Jefferson for the Huskies home opener.

Included in the win was a safety and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Through three games, the 2-1 Huskies have scored just four offensive touchdowns while the defense has special teams has four safeties and a TD.

Jefferson was a good team to get the ship righted after the 42-7 loss to Hononegah in week two.

The J-Hawks are now 0-3 and have scored just 16 points and given up 122. The Huskies host another winless squad next week in Guilford.

Volleyball ends losing streak

Harlem’s volleyball showed some life after last week’s coaching change. After starting the season 2-1, the Huskies administration replaced coach Gretchen Kuchinski. The shocked

Huskies proceeded to lose six straight matches. That included a Tuesday home loss against Auburn, which is not one of the traditional NIC-10 powers.

On Wednesday, it appeared to be an entirely new team as Harlem rebounded from blowing a 23-17 lead in a 25-23 loss to Byron to knock off the Tigers 28-26, 25-23 in the final two sets.

The winning point came from a back line spike by senior Brooke Boettcher. Jeremy Weaver, Harlem’s interim coach, said the change was just a matter of energy.

“We were smarter. We limited our errors,” Weaver said. He also said the players are getting used to a different voice.

“I’d worked with them a little bit, but obviously changing coaches during the season is hard,”

Weaver said. “It’s up to them. I know wholeheartedly that they can win no matter who is coaching them.”

Boys cross country has up and down week

On Sept. 2, Harlem took third in its own invitational at Kieselburg County Forest Preserve, finishing behind Guilford and Fox Lake Grant, while beating five other schools.

Dylan Malmgren was the top finisher for Harlem, taking eighth, while Leo Ramos came in ninth.

On Wednesday, on the same course, the Huskies struggled to seventh out of eight teams as Harlem competed without Malmgren or Ramos. The top Huskie was Brady Jacobson at 34th overall.

On Sept. 9, the Huskies rebounded to take eighth out of 22 teams in the Lake Park Harvey Braus Classic. It was a solid showing considering Malmgren missed this meet as well.

Ramos was the top Harlem runner, coming in 32nd.
