Last Friday at the Cherry Bowl, the Lady Huskies earned a team score of 5,739 over six rounds that was good for a tie for seventh place.

A uncharacteristically average Friday kept Harlem’s vaunted girls bowling team from adding an eighth IHSA state bowling title.

On Friday at the Cherry Bowl in Cherry Bowl, the Huskies recorded a team score of 5,739 over six rounds. That was good for a tie for seventh place, 421 pins behind Joliet West.

Harlem made a charge on Saturday, eventually climbing to third place after the third round, before fading to take fifth with a final score of 11,649. That was 574 pins behind Joliet West, which won its second girls bowling state title in school history.

To illustrate how uncharacteristic Friday’s effort was, the Huskies had qualified for the IHSA state tournament with a regional score of 6,081, the second-highest regional score, and then had a 6,393 in Sycamore on Feb. 10 in the sectionals. That was 302 points higher than the next highest-qualifier, which was the eventual champion, Joliet West.

As good as Harlem was all year, they were led by three sophomores and they were up-and-down this past weekend. Allison Roberts, who finished ninth overall, was strong the first three rounds (688-598-726), but then faltered in her final three games with a 497.

Alexis Born alternated all weekend with scores of 630 then 530 followed by 633 and a 515. Ashlen Teves, who finished 34th, was the most consistent with series of 582-572-629-592.

Senior Miranda Klenz finished her high school career by taking 37th overall with a score of 2,341.

Shields to move on to boys state swim meet

Sophomore Bo Shields earned himself another meet for the 2023-2024 season by winning the 100-yard breaststroke at Saturday’s IHSA Swimming Sectional at Byron.

Shields won the race with a time of 1:00.88, edging Vito Skominas of Hononegah, who swam a 1:01.30.

It was another strong meet overall for Shields, who powered Harlem to a fifth-place finish out of 11 teams in the meet.

Shields finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.12. DeKalb’s Kevin Sullivan edged him with a time of 2:01.24.

Senior Evan McDonald also had a strong meet, although his season came to an end. McDonald finished fourth in the 200 IM and he teamed up with Shields, Zach Nelson and Kayden Moore to take fourth in the 200 medley relay.

The IHSA state meet is next weekend at the MC Natatorium in Westmont.
