Rockford Public Library (RPL) announces the accession of Collection, a comprehensive art book by renowned local cultural figures Doc Slafkosky and Jerry Kortman, into its Local History Department.

This significant addition documents five decades of art collection and represents an important contribution to the preservation of Rockford’s artistic heritage.

The meticulously crafted volume, printed on high-gloss paper in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, showcases stunning visual documentation of artwork by celebrated local, regional, and international artists.

Already part of the prestigious Getty Research Institute and Museum’s collection in California, this book now serves as a valuable resource for RPL patrons interested in exploring Rockford’s rich artistic legacy.

“This volume represents an informal history of Rockford area art and artists,” says Doug Janicke, Librarian and Archivist of Collection Services for RPL. “Its addition to our Local History collection provides an invaluable window into our community’s artistic evolution and achievements.”

The book features works by notable Rockford artists including Robert McCauley, John Deill, Roland Poska, Tom Heflin, Sarah Reed-McNamara, Lynn Fischer-Carlson, and Cherri Rittenhouse, among others. Additionally, it includes documentation of significant works from artists and artifacts from New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, China, and Sao Paulo.

Collection is available for viewing in the Local History Department, located on the 3rd Floor of the Main Library at 215 N. Wyman Street. For broader community access, circulating copies can be borrowed from both the Main Library and the RPL East Branch.

“We’re excited to make this important documentation of our region’s artistic heritage accessible to all community members,” says Erin Stachowiak, Director of Collection Services at RPL. “Having it available in both our archive and circulating collection ensures that everyone can explore and appreciate this significant piece of Rockford’s cultural history.”
