BELVIDERE – Mayor Mike Chamberlain announced Monday, Feb. 22 that after 18 years, the 25-ton rooftop heating unit at city hall “has decided it can no longer work properly.”
Life expectancy of such a piece of equipment is 15 to 20 years, he said.
The heat exchanger needed to be replaced and he said that would cost $6,000, or about one-third of what it would take to purchase a new one.
Three bids were received to buy a brand new unit with Miller Engineering turning in the low quote of $18,872.
The committee of the whole approved the recommendation of Public Works Director Brent Anderson to accept the low bid. Formal action is expected at Monday night’s.
