BELVIDERE – The local VFW Post 1461 had the opportunity to donate funds to a local organization that has served the Belvidere/Boone County community for years.
According to VFW Post 1461 Commander Greg Kelm, the National Veterans of Foreign War headquarters reserved funds so VFW Posts across the country could donate to local organizations and have the National Veterans of Foreign War match the donation up to $1,000.
However, there was one condition. The money must be donated to an organization not affiliated with veterans.
Upon hearing this news, the Belvidere VFW decided to donate a $1,000 to the Belvidere Salvation Army.
“The Salvation Army has always been a great service to our community and to our veterans,” Commander Kelm said. “Vets only have nice things to say about the Salvation Army. We have the utmost respect for you.”
In recognition of all of the Salvation Army’s efforts, Commander Kelm was happy to present this donation to this local service.
On Friday, Feb. 26, Commander Kelm presented a check of $2,000 to Lieutenants Tomas and Martha Valladares of the Belvidere Salvation Army.
Tomas and Martha both showed their great appreciation for the donation.
“A penny makes a big difference,” Lieutenant Tomas Valladares said. With a bigger donation like the VFW’s contribution, the money will make a huge difference towards the Salvation Army’s efforts.
“With donors like you [VFW Post 1461] that’s how we can continue,” Lieutenant Tomas Valladares said.
