BOONE COUNTY – Every year, after state tournaments have concluded, the NIC-10 has a competition among those individual bowlers who finished in the Top 16.
That means bowlers go against the cream of the crop in their conference, which also means going head-to-head with their teammates.
This year’s event recently concluded with Harlem sweeping first place among boys and girls. But Belvidere bowlers were in the mix, with Ashley Platt of Belvidere North and Joe Gallagher from Belvidere finishing among the first six in their respective competitions.
Platt, a senior, averaged 223 per game and came in second behind junior Mylee McCracken of Harlem, who carried a 226 average. Gallagher, a junior, was sixth with a 219 average.
Most of the Blue Thunder and Bucs improved on their individual standings during the regular season.
Platt averaged 211 in league play, which was good for third place, with Gallagher having a 210 to take the 16th and final qualifying spot.
In the final analysis, Gallagher rolled a 290 in the last game of the season, good for fourth place behind a couple of 300s and a 299. His three-game 748 series, recorded on opening day, was five pins shy of earning a place among the NIC-10’s top five bowlers.
Belvidere also was represented in the Top 16 by senior Sara Deddo, who came in sixth with a 200 average. That was seven places higher than where she finished during the regular season, when she averaged 191.
North’s Kylie Johnson, just a sophomore, averaged 198 to take 10th in the Top 16 Tournament that was three pins better than her league average, which was a 195 that put her in ninth place.
Sophomore Hailey Carter from Belvidere took 12th in the Top 16 with a 188 average, four places better than during the regular season. She averaged 189 in conference action.
The only other local in the Top 16 event was Jordan Paulson of Belvidere North. He averaged 193, for 16th place, after finishing 10th in conference play.
Trophies and scholarships were awarded to the first, second and third-place Top 16 finishers during the banquet. First place got $100; second place received $75; and third place got $50.
The fourth and fifth place winners each received a trophy.
During the recently concluded NIC-10 season, the girls’ teams from Belvidere and Belvidere North tied for second place with 7-2 records. Both have a number of standout bowlers due to return for the 2016-2017 campaign.
The Lady Blue Thunder once again won the sectional tournament and continued to state, where they finished eighth. They were seventh in 2014-2015.
North’s boys came in at 5-4, with the Bucs at 1-8. They also are in line to return top-notch competitors next year. No one qualified for state this year.
