The family, friends and loved ones of Kara Arnett Ferguson gathered to support her in her fight against Hodgkin’s lymphoma at a fundraising benefit on Saturday, July 9 at 4 p.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

“It was so nice to see everyone, from childhood friends to people I have worked with in the past, residents I have taken care of, family and friends,” Ferguson said. “I want to thank everyone who came out for the benefit. I am truly blessed and thankful for everyone who helped out, donated baskets, auction items, money or food, those who gave cards and so much more.”

Ferguson has three children, Ashley (David) Howe, Bo and Shayna Ferguson and three grandchildren, Bella, Harlow, and Sawyer.

She graduated from Belvidere High School in 1987 and later received her Registered Nursing degree.

After receiving her diagnoses of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, she started chemo treatments in April.

Ferguson’s friends Stephanie GallanoOsterberg, Dani Cornell Klaus, and Heidi Toepfer Brown organized the event.

Kara 2“Kara has taken care of me in the past, and I knew I had to do what I could to help her during this time,” Osterberg said. “The benefit was over and above what I ever expected. There was such an outpouring of love, concern, and generosity.”

The benefit featured a pig roast dinner, drinks, raffles, a live auction, and a DJ with dancing. There were over 100 items donated, including big screen TVs, an iPad Mini, a Go-Pro, art, gift cards, and home goods.

“My mind is at ease financially while I concentrate on getting through the next steps,” Ferguson said. “I am forever grateful. The intent is to cure and now I have to work on fighting the cancer.”

Ferguson is set to begin a more aggressive chemo treatment in the coming weeks.

“I spent the entire night talking to people, some I haven’t seen in years,” Ferguson said. “I also heard stories from other people going through cancer. I was overwhelmed by their inspiring words and their kindness.”

The benefit was a complete success.

Kara“We can’t begin to thank everyone who helped make the benefit happen enough,” Osterberg said. “All of the pieces fell into place. I am full of pride for our community and our circle of friends and family. Kara has dedicated her life to taking care of others, now it’s time to take care of Kara.”
