As each year comes to a close, it is a tradition to highlight some of the most memorable moments of the past year. The year 2016 was full of hot button issues. At the forefront of these issues were proposed asphalt plants; the first was fought against last summer and the petition was withdrawn. Recently, a new petition has residents once again rallying against the newly proposed asphalt plant. Also, concerning to residents expressing opposition in large numbers is a proposal by the Greater Lakes Basin Railroad.  Months of meetings and school tours revolved around a bond referendum in the amount of $44,000. If the bond were to be passed, it would be used for improvements to the high school and to implement part of a Master Facilities plan. School tours allowed the public to see areas in need of improvements. Meetings opened doors to give input on what they would like to see in the future. The bond referendum was voted down as proponents felt they did not want to pay more on taxes. Other reasons stated, was the cost associated with proposed projects that were laid out. Meetings are still ongoing today about the proposed asphalt plant and Greater Lakes Basin proposal.

The first Yeti Fest offered winter fun in February. Those who came out had a blast learning to snow shoe. Originally plans were to incorporate a full day of fun including ice skating at the Village Green Park, but due to weather conditions, only snow shoeing was available. It has been announced that this fun family oriented event is returning with even more to offer. More information will be shared soon!

Janet Lynn signed copies of her new book, “The Wheel, Legacy of Excellence” at the Rockton Township Historical Society. Janet Lynn was warm and friendly as she greeted each person who purchased her book. Personally, I had always wanted to meet Janet Lynn, and was truly star struck and honored to have had this dream come true!

Rockton Police and the Rockton Fire reached out to the Community in different ways. In September, members of the Rockton Police Association organized a super fun ‘Blues and BBQ’s Event.’ “Harlan Jefferson” entertained for hours. Police became better acquainted with the Community. A very special Police Memorial in May honored those who have died in the line of duty. The Fire Department hosted two open houses. One included a pancake breakfast, goodies for kids and a chance to learn about fire safety by going through a smoke house. A stunning flag and fire truck display was an awesome sight! All who visited also had an opportunity to visit fire equipment. Ample fun was provided for area families! The second open house occurred during this year’s Christmas Walk.

Rockton Rocks was a new craze with a different twist than the popular Pokemon Go. People of varied ages painted rocks, hid them, and searched for rocks designed by others. Creativity and exercise were two elements behind this popular activity!

Settler’s Park was the venue for many different events. Music in the Park continued to draw huge crowds, who enjoyed food and live music on Wednesday nights in the summer. The Hononegah Woman’s Club Arts and Crafts Fair used Settlers Park as a brand new location and found great success! Newly added to the event were food vendors and music, which created a fresh and lively atmosphere at the Arts and Crafts Fair. Mellany’s Fourth Annual Dog Walk “Dogs at the Disco” welcomed a record number of dogs with their owners. As a new twist, costume and dance contests brought loads of laughter, all while raising money to continue the Pet Therapy program at Mercy Health Rockford and to benefit the Pet Peace of Mind program at Mercy Hospice Care. Right after the dog walk, dogs and owners headed over to the Walt Williamson Pool to take their final swim of the season. Every year before the pool closes dogs only are allowed to romp, play or to swim in a day dedicated just to them. Hanz Brew Fest raised enough money to maintain a scholarship fund in the name of Todd Hansmeier. Hanz Brew Fest organizers joined in bringing back Midwest Oktoberfest which drew crowds of around 1,000.

Roscoe Rockton Lions Youth Football held Opening Day ceremonies on Aug, 6. Moving beyond the season, football players, cheer squads, coaches and everyone who is associated with the Lion’s Football, came together in a show of support for victims of the floods in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Together needed items were collected and sent to Louisiana and extended to the Louisiana Youth Football Organization. Elle Johnson, a Lil Indian Cheer Coach said it best, “I just wanted to help, because if it were my brothers or sister going through that, I know we would want help to be able to play our sports again.”  In addition to donations being collected, money from fifty-fifty raffle tickets were sold at the games. Students at Hononegah High School raised $16,600 this year alone by taking part in the “I Pink I Can” run or walk.

Drama Club students at Hononegah gave a powerhouse performance in last year’s spring musical “Le Miserable.” This fall, a fully entertaining production of “Halloween Screams” delighted audiences!

In business news, Mack’s Lounge closed. The former Flying Pig was purchased by new owners and is now known as “The Mix.” Miss Andrea’s Dance Factory has moved to Rockton’s Main Street. Last year this highly respected dance studio celebrated 25 years in the Rockton Community! Verve Hair Studio moved into the former Kings and Queens building. RyCom celebrated with an office reveal in late January. The Old Stone Preschool celebrated 20 years in Rockton on Aug.7.
