BYRON – Join us for a fun-filled family day on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and help support the Alec Catherwood Memorial Scholarships that is given out to four graduating seniors at Byron and Stillman Valley High Schools each year. Alec, a 2009 Byron High School graduate, was a Lance Corporal serving our country in the Marine Corps. On Oct. 14, 2010, he was killed in action while deployed in Afghanistan.

To honor Alec’s kind and giving spirit, his parents set up a fund in his name to be used for four $1000 scholarships per year for one boy and one girl at each of the two high schools. The recipients are nominated by teachers and voted upon by the classmates and the award is based strictly on character. All proceeds from this event will be used to fund future scholarships.

The family-friendly event will be held at Byron Motosports Park, 2525 E. Ash Road, Byron, IL (follow German Church Rd toward the Nuclear Plant and look for the signs). There will also be a Motorcycle Ride with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. with stands up at 10:15 a.m. You can also preregister for the Motorcycle Ride and/or the Bags tournament by visiting the website: http://bikesandbands.wix.com/benefitevents.

Guests to the event will enjoy a bounce house, cornhole bags tournament (preregister online or at the event beginning at noon, tournament begins at 2:30 p.m.), silent auction, 50/50 raffle and some great live music starting at 1 p.m. by the bands “Destination Unknown”, “Haf Bitten Moon” and Byron’s very own band of high school teachers “Mike and Adam”. Rumor has it that Mr. McHale and Mr. Gura will be joined by another special guest. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy delicious brats being sold by Headon’s Market, other concessions and a beer tent.

Admission to the event is just $5/person for a day and evening filled with making great memories and supporting a wonderful cause. The Bags Tournament entry fee is $20/team of two and the Motorcycle Ride is $20/bike (ride fee includes admission to the event).

If you cannot make it to the event, but would like to make a donation or if you would like to donate an item/basket for the silent auction, please call the event organizers Jeffrey Rieck at 815-520-1770 or Tonya Poppen at 815-222-1970. You can also find more information on the event Facebook page: Bikes and Bands Benefit. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, so your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
