Neighbors’ Fest offers opportunity for a community gathering

The Cactus League of older boys played ball on one diamond while the four to six year-olds played the next diamond over.

“The whole idea of Neighbors’ Fest is to get people to the park, to get them together to have fun and talk,” said Ron Maxey, past president of the Lions Club and current League Director for North Boone Baseball

 
 

Honoring John H. Kaiser, namesake of Belvidere VFW Post 1461

	Event organizer John Darley addresses the crowd during the opening ceremonies of the John H. K Kaiser memorial held June 10.  Kaiser, a U.S. Marine, was killed in action fighting the Germans during World War I, 100 years ago this month, and is the namesake of the Belvidere VFW post.

“I think it’s important the public recognize the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make for the country,” said John Darley, a Vietnam War veteran himself and organizer of the ceremony.

 
 

Summer kickoff party begins with a challenge

	The Belvidere Family YMCA provided the ‘Pin the Badge on the Cop’ game and other fun activities for the Summer Lunch Kick Off Party.

The Belvidere Police Department, City of Belvidere, Belvidere Fire Department and Belvidere Family YMCA hosted a free family fun event on Friday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Highline Drive and Lake Shore Drive.

City Hall was the gathering place on Friday morning, June 8, as two firefighters took their Oath of Office as they received promotions. Shawn Schadle moved up in rank from Lieutenant to Captain and Chris Letourneau became a Lieutenant.

It’s treasure-hunting at its finest, as dealers gather their ‘fleas’ and stuff including antiques, crafts, county furniture, old comics, toys, memorabilia of all sorts, and lots of collectibles.

 
 

Healthy Living Expo draws mature crowds for a fun event

The Boone County Council on Aging presented their 16th annual Healthy Living Expo at Belvidere North High School on Tuesday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme this year was 50s/60s/70s TV comedies.

Firefighter considers hometown accomplishments

	Hometown firefighter Cpt. Brian Harbison is retiring from the Belvidere Fire Dept. and moving to a new position in Fox Crossing, Wis.

“It all started in April, 1995,” Cpt. Brian Harbison said. “I went to the fire academy in Rockford for ten weeks to achieve the minimum state requirements. Then I was assigned a station and a shift. Then I went on to get my EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) license in the fall of 1995.

 
 

Hooked on Fishing Clinic for kids draws families to Spencer Park

Kids flocked to the firefighters after the water safety/rescue discussion to find out more.

The Coon Creek Casters held their annual kid’s fishing clinic in Spencer Park on Saturday, June 2. The event began at 9 a.m. with crowds of kids and their families eager to race down to the pond and start casting their lines into the water.
