The ninth annual Build-A-Bike returns Wednesday, May 14, to bring donated bicycles to pre-selected children in need.

A beloved local tradition is rolling back into town. Build-A-Bike Belvidere returns for its ninth year on Wednesday, May 14, continuing its mission of bringing the community together to put bikes – and big smiles – into the hands of local children.

The one-day event rallies together volunteers, sponsors, and community leaders to assemble and donate bicycles to local children in need who are pre-selected prior to the event. This program does more than providing just a ride, but a sense of independence, empowerment, and joy. In addition to receiving a brand-new bike, each child is outfitted with a safety helmet and information on bike safety.

Organizers say the event’s success lies in its simplicity and community-driven spirit.

“We’re not just building bikes – we’re building confidence, opportunity, and brighter futures,” said Joe Hamblock, program organizer. “This program is about giving kids a boost – emotionally, physically, and socially.”

Over the years, Build-A-Bike has grown to serve more children and engage more volunteers, with local schools, service organizations, and donors stepping up to help make each year a success. Build-A-Bike continues to thrive thanks to generous donations, sponsors, and the dedication of volunteers who roll up their sleeves to help assemble bikes and give back-supporting kids in our own backyard. This year, over 100 bikes will be donated to community kids.
