Belvidere North boys’ basketball team done
Back-to-back wins helped close the month of January for the Belvidere North Blue Thunder boys’ basketball team. Wins over nearest neighbor Belvidere in overtime on Wednesday, Jan. 25 preceded a Friday, Jan. 27 win over the Harlem Huskies, 54-48.
As February opened, the situation changed and the brief two-game win streak came to a close.
On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the team returned home from their two-game road trip to face Hononegah.
On Friday, Feb. 10, the Blue Thunder travel for the final time this season and they will have to contend with the E-Rabs. East will look to close the regular season strong and rip second place away from Hononegah before the final games are completed.
The closing swing starts with Hononegah and the Indians currently sit in second place in the NIC-10. Their 9-3 mark places them one game ahead of third place contender East and a win and loss ahead of Auburn.
No one will catch Boylan it seems as there remains less than two weeks to go, and the lead has settled into two full games.
Overall, the Titans are 21-4 on the season and 12-0 in the conference. They are closing in on receiving the top seed in the upcoming Class 4A Regional.
Belvidere North hasn’t been told where they are going to go to start the post-season the week of Feb. 26. The IHSA has requested the assistance of Jefferson and Hononegah High Schools in hosting the first round games.
The field of competitors includes the two hosts as well as Rockford Lutheran, Guilford, Boylan, East, Harlem, and Boylan. Also playing in the Elgin High School Sectional Complex are Hampshire and Huntley.
When the IHSA Selection Committee meets the third week of February, they will determine which teams get the highest position to start and which teams will have to “play-in” on Monday for their right to advance to the respective regional semi-final.
Belvidere North could be one of those teams looking to have to play-in for the right to move on to face one of the considered top seeds, which could be Boylan as one followed by East or Hononegah as the two seed.
Either way, the regular season is almost over and the Blue Thunder have the chance to try to grab some hardware for themselves before it all comes to an end.
Many of those they shared the winter floor with already brought home their own highest honors. The Belvidere North Blue Thunder recently were named State of Illinois’ large-school Cheerleading Champion.
