Basketball on a Wood Court

BELVIDERE – On Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m., Belvidere North’s varsity basketball team played against the Hononegah Indians at home.
Hononegah scored off their first possession with Josh Donaldson, #23, made a three point shot and then made another point off a free throw when North fouled.
Hononegah’s Donaldson made the next two points of the game with 3:43 left of the first quarter.
Finally, with 1:25 left in the first period, Belvidere North’s Evan Waddell, #12, made the Blue Thunder Boys first two points of the game.
Hononegah’s Donaldson followed that play with a two point layup of his own, bringing the Indians lead up 8-2. Hononegah also made the next score with another two points.
Belvidere North’s Rylen Kirk, #22, made a three point basket with 41 seconds left of the first period.
North made the next score with a two point layup. Then, with only 12 seconds left in the first quarter, Hononegah’s Kameron Kolberg, #14, made three points right at the buzzer to end the period with the score at 7-13.
The second quarter began with Belvidere North’s Matt Konkler, #2, bringing in a two point drive straight down the lane. Hononegah followed that play with a three point basket, two free throws off of a Belvidere North foul, and another two pointer.
North’s Konkler followed that play with a three pointer for his team, making the score 12-20. Belvidere North’s, Jake Bannon, #5, attempted to shoot but a Hononegah player fouled him. Bannon went to the line and made both of his free throw shots.
Next, the Indians’ Jackson Doyle, #25, drove in a two point layup. Hononegah kept their lead going with back to back two pointers.
Then, Hononegah increased their lead with another free throw after a North foul.
Next, Belvidere North’s Corbin Gustafson, #15, made a two point shot.
Hononegah followed with a three pointer, but Gustafson came back with another two points to bridge the gap between the Indians and Blue Thunder.
During halftime the co-ed cheer team received a trophy for their participation in the NIC-10 conference. The Belvidere North Varsity Co-ed Cheer Team came in first with the score of 88.36. Each team member stood in the center of Belvidere North’s gym and was personally presented with a certificate, a handshake, and the trophy. Hononegah’s Cheer Team came in second place, and Belvidere’s Cheer Team came in third.
The third quarter began with Hononegah’s Donaldson, making a three point basket.
After the time out Hononegah’s Miller was fouled on a two point basket. Miller went up to the free throw line and made one out of his two free throws.
The Indians’ Max Miller was doing especially well for his team. He also made the next two point basket and was fouled by Belvidere. Miller went to the line for his extra shots and made one of his two free throws.
Hononegah scored the next few shots of the game. First with a two point layup, and then with a three point shot made by Doyle, which brought Hononegah’s lead up to 49-18.
Finally, North’s Kirk attempted to make a basket. Although he missed, Kirk was fouled on the play and made one free throw shot.
Hononegah’s Spencer Murdoch, #55, made a two point basket after the free throw followed by another two pointer.
Next, Hononegah’s Byron Stewart, #5, made a three point basket.
Belvidere North’s John Steward, #1, made a two point shot.
Then, Belvidere North’s Kirk was fouled twice by Hononegah at the same time. The referee called both technical fouls, which meant Kirk went up to the free throw line alone. Everyone else from each team stood back and out of the way. Kirk went up to the line for his first two bonus shots and made both. Kirk went back up to the line for his second two free throws and again made both shots.
Next, Hononegah’s Murdoch attempted a shot but was fouled. Murdoch went up to the free throw line and made one out of his bonus shots.
With only 10 seconds left of the third period, Belvidere North’s Konkler, was fouled and made one out of his two free throws. Konkler stole the ball back and with three seconds left of the third and made a two point layup. The third quarter ended 30-58.
The fourth period began with Belvidere North’s Kirk scoring a three point basket. Konkler scored again for North with a two point layup.
Fouls continued allowing both teams to score off of free throws and rebounds.
Then, to end the game, Belvidere North made a deep three to make the final score 47-81.
