LOVES PARK – Sparked by Ben Deardorff’s 278 single game and 715 series, Belvidere’s boys bowling team came within 76 pins of knocking off Belvidere North in week two of the new season.

North won two of three games to edge their cross-town rival, 3,661 pins to 3,585.

In girls play, the Lady Blue Thunder used a balanced offense to defeat the Lady Bucs by 119 pins, 3,117 to 2,998.

North’s two junior varsity teams also won to join the varsity squads as being undefeated and tied for first place in the conference. Logan Blankenship sparked the Blue Thunder JVs with a 278 single game and 707 series, both top marks for the day.

Ben Deardorff’s single game tied for fifth place among individuals for Dec. 4 varsity competition.

Performers on both boys teams showed improvement from opening-day scores.

Jordan Paulson led North with a 654 series and high game of 257, both personal bests for 2015-2016. Josh Pawlowski’s three-game series jumped to a 646, with Peyton Lutzow improving to a 591. Garrett Nelson’s high single game went from a 203 last week to a 209.

Also helping with the win were David Rayphole with a 615 series, his second 600-plus effort in as many games, and Javier Martinez with a 578.

Four Bucs, led by Deardorff, improved their series from the first week. Larry Tripamer turned in a 575; Kevin Jenks, a 555; and Brock Irwin, a 545. Joe Gallagher didn’t improve on his series but no one was complaining about his 667 against North. His first-game effort was a 748, which still ranks among the best in NIC-10 action.

Girls, JV competition

In girls play North’s balanced scores helped overcome Belvidere, which was led by Holley Steelberg’s personal best 621 series and 257 high single game.

Ashley Platt led the Lady Blue Thunder with a 598 series followed by Kylie Johnson with a 580; Brynn Lambrecht, a personal best 532; Kaitlynn Trimble with a new high of 508; and Anissa Hintt, a 445.

Emily Nakashima was called up from the JV squad and she recorded a 514 series, with a high game of 196.

For Belvidere, Steelberg’s 257 was high for the day in the NIC-10 and currently ranks third after two games. Her 621 series was a 47-pin improvement over the opening match.

Hailey Carter recorded a 534 series; Sara Deddo, a 511; Madelyn Deardorff, a 467, which was 41 pins higher than last week; Alexis Sherman, a 439; and Hannah Lowery, a 423.

In junior varsity competition, Marian Anderson rolled a 610 series with a 222 high single game for Belvidere North. Those scores were third and second best, respectively, for the week in NIC-10 action.

North’s 2,589 to 1,968 win over Belvidere featured a 975 single game, which was high among teams for the week. The 2,589 total pinfall was second best.

Daniel Weger had a 555 series and 210 single game, which was second to Blankenship’s standout performance in the boys’ win over the Bucs, 3,249 to 2,667.

Team-wise, the Thunder’s 1,141 high game and 3,247 series rank third for the season.
