Boone County Conservation District hosts annual Autumn Pioneer Festival
BELVIDERE – The Boone County Conservation District in Belvidere will hold the 34th Annual Autumn Pioneer Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Roger Gustafson Nature Center and Festival Grounds located at 603 N. Appleton Road.
Travel back to the 1800s and learn about the lifestyles of crafts of the day.
Watch a blacksmith working at his forge, talk to voyageurs, settlers, and buck-skinners.
Explore a wigwam in the Native American area, visit two authentic 1800s log cabins and a one room schoolhouse.
Enjoy the sights as you tour the grounds on a horse drawn wagon. Learn how to throw a tomahawk, use a cross cut saw, and play old time games.
Listen to live music throughout the day. Sample apple butter and bean soup cooked over an open fire.
Food vendor offerings include prairie chicken, pioneer fries, buffalo stew, pie and ice cream, doughnuts, popcorn, old fashioned root beer, and lemonade.
These are just a few of the many fun activities offered at the festival. Admission is free and donations are cheerfully accepted.
The Autumn Pioneer Festival hours are Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 25 will be school days from 9 a.m. to noon. The day will be open to public school, private school, and homeschooled groups, as well as local senior groups by appointment only.
