In July, the Boone County Veterans Club held their 10th “Support Our Troops Rally” where they raised $1,900 to aid veterans and military personnel currently serving the United States.
The Boone County Veterans Club decided to use $900 from the fundraiser for postage in shipping 25 care packages to servicemen and servicewomen in Afghanistan.
The other funds raised from the “Support Our Troops Rally” were donated to the Veterans Assistance Commission of Boone County (VACBC).
On Monday, Aug. 1, VFW Post 1461 Commander Greg Kelm presented the $1,000 check to Veterans Services Coordinator Kathy Reed of the VACBC.
“This is so exciting,” Reed said. “This will go toward food, housing for veterans who need assistance, and sometimes for medical bills if they need medications.”
Reed also indicated that the funds will be used toward items to support veterans during the holiday season, especially since the VACBC currently is out of food for the veterans. The funds also can be used toward transportation for veterans going to medical appointments or job interviews to “improve their quality of life.”
Commander Kelm said that with this donation, “every penny will go to supporting veterans.”
The VACBC was highly appreciative of the generous donation.
“Thank you so much for doing that,” VACBC Superintendent Bob Ryder said.
To Commander Kelm, it is just a part of his duty as a veteran.
“The VFW [along with the Boone County Veterans Club] is here to serve the veterans and here to serve the community,” Commander Kelm said.
