Bucs Battle in Volleyball Regional Opener
By Chris Johnson, REPORTER
The NIC-10 regular season has come to a close. The post-season soon to follow for the Belvidere Lady Bucs as they get their chance to reflect on the season and look forward to better things to come. As the final standings were released, near the top were the Guilford Lady Vikings, Belvidere North Blue Thunder as well as the Hononegah Lady Indians and Harlem Lady Huskies. Belvidere kept company with the 2-26 Auburn Lady Knights and 3-16 Freeport Lady Pretzels in the lower regions of the NIC-10. Belvidere couldn’t find the wins in the NIC-10 this season. The 0-11 mark was included in a difficult 3-20 campaign. A win in a non-conference battle with the neighboring North Boone Lady Vikings on Sept. 10 was one of the highlights this season. With the regular season over, the post-season began for the nine-seed Belvidere North Lady Blue Thunder on Monday, Oct. 25. The opponent was well known. It was someone they had fallen to already this season.
The Freeport Lady Pretzels were issued the eight-seed, with the Regional being hosted by Belvidere High School. A win by the Lady Bucs will mean a showdown with two-seed Genoa-Kingston. The Lady Cogs are one of the top four teams in the Freeport Sectional Complex. The Belvidere Regional Champion will be crowned Thursday, Oct. 27. The winner will move to Freeport for an opening round contest against the winner from the Rock Falls Regional. Sterling is the top team in the Freeport Sectional Complex. Following completion of the 2016 Illinois State Volleyball Championship Tournament, teams will head back to the gyms to prepare for the winter sports season and basketball. Many tip-off tournaments will take place the week of Nov. 14 for girls’ programs across the area.
The following week the boys’ teams will hit the courts for the first time this season as they play in their own Thanksgiving week tip-off classics and non-conference matches.
