Carol Lynn Ingles Obituary
Carol Lynn Ingles (nee Coon), age 72, a Belvidere native who during her Belvidere High School days in the early 1960s was an editor and reporter for the Belvidere Daily Republican, died peacefully in hospice care in the cardiac unit of Waukesha Memorial Hospital in the late evening of Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, after a short illness. Born Aug. 28, 1946, Carol was the only child of Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy David (“Coon from Boone”) and Marie Coon (nee Sivesind), then attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb for a year before deciding on full-time newspaper work. She was employed by the Centralia Sentinel before moving to Springfield, where as an editor for the Illinois State Journal she met her future husband, James David (“Dave”) Ingles, a sports department staffer. Carol rose to become “State Editor,” having nothing to do with government in the state capital, but rather in charge of two dozen local correspondents in outlying communities.
Carol moved to Wisconsin upon her and Dave’s Sept. 25, 1971, marriage in Belvidere when Dave joined the staff at Kalmbach Publishing Co.’s Trains Magazine, from which he retired in 2007, seven years before he concluded 47 years of service at the firm, having continued until Sept. 2018 part-time on its quarterly Classic Trains Magazine. They lived in Waukesha for 44 years beginning in 1974.
Carol was not employed outside the home in Wisconsin but volunteered with the Waukesha School District as a pre-school student screener, served on the parent-teacher group at Banting Elementary School, and in 1991 wrote a 25th anniversary history booklet of Banting. Carol, who successfully managed diabetes for 40 years, enjoyed listening to old-time radio programs, working crossword puzzles, trying out new recipes appearing in the Milwaukee Journal, competing in handicap bowling leagues at Fracaro’s, Red Carpet (Waukesha), and Kuglitsch’s (New Berlin) Lanes, and traveling with Dave (and later with their daughter) throughout the U.S. (including Alaska, visiting every state except Hawaii), and Canada, much of the travel being by train.
Carol is survived and will be dearly missed by Dave, daughter Susan (“Suzy”) Ingles and grandson Carson Smith of Waukesha, and many friends not only locally, especially best friend Carletta Campion and her family, but across the U.S., as well as relatives in southwestern Wisconsin and, on Dave’s side, in California, northern and central Illinois, Florida, and London, England. Dave and Suzy would especially like to thank the caregivers at Care-Age Brookfield, ManorCare Pewaukee, and Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service was held from 3 to 5 p.m. on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 19, at Church and Chapel Waukesha, 380 Bluemound Road (corner of Highways J & JJ), which is serving the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to personal favorite charities in Carol’s name, or to any of those charities favored by her, including: Museum of Broadcast Communications, Chicago; Waukesha Food Pantry; Wounded Warrior Project; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; American Diabetes Association; and American Cancer Society
