MCHENRY—Did you know that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease? Unfortunately, as a nation, we’re becoming more inactive. Adults spend more time at work than ever before and according to the American Heart Association (AHA), less than 30% of high school students get enough daily physical activity to keep their hearts healthy. On Wednesday, April 6th, McHenry County hopes you will take a 30-minute walk to raise awareness for National Start Walking Day, sponsored by the AHA, which coincides with National Public Health Week, April 4-10.

Research shows the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, improve blood pressure, lower the risk of obesity, enhance mental well-being and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

There is no right time to walk. Whether you prefer starting your day with a brisk walk., or unwinding after your day, walking is a great way to help keep healthy. Asking a friend to walk with you or taking several 10-15 minute walks each day are effective ways to help you start.
