The Hononegah Girls Swimming and Diving Team finished fifth at the IHSA Sectional Meet on Saturday at Rockford Jefferson High School. Diver Abbey Hellinga finished third in diving to qualify for the IHSA State Meet. Teammate Kaitlynn Alt was sixth with 323.35 points. Hellinga a Sophomore, faced stiff competition with four divers qualifying for the State Meet from the Rockford Sectional. Her 417.35 point total has her seeded 19th out of 48 divers at the State Meet. The other divers who qualified are, Sectional Champion Hannah Bergstrom a Senior from Boylan who had 453.40 points, Sterling Senior Kallie Zuidema who was second with 448.25 points and Junior Brytlyn Greenlee from Guilford who was fourth.

The swimmers were led by Senior Co-Captain Julia Carabelli and Sophomore Emily McCabe. Carabelli was sixth in both the 200 free and 100 back. She dropped 5.5 seconds in the 200 free to swim a season best time of 2:04.60 and also had a season best 1:03.83 by dropping 3.4 seconds. McCabe was fourth with season best times in both the 200IM swimming a 2:21.90 and the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.93. The two teamed with Senior Madeline Massetti and Junior Emily Bax to finish fourth in the 200 free relay with a season best time of 1:44.77. The 400 free relay team of Sophomore Megan Leppert, Massetti, Carabelli and McCabe swam a season best time of 3:55.77 to finish fourth in the 400 free relay. Massetti was eighth in the 50 free with a personal best time of 26.31. Bax was eighth in the 50 free with a time of 26.42 and 12th in the 100 back with a time of 1:10.15; both personal best times. Leppert swam a personal best 58.82 in the 100 free to finish eighth and was tenth in the 100 breast. Freshman Kyra Cure finished 11th in the 100 free with a personal best time of 1:00.04. Sophomores Stephanie Betts and Ashlynn Dull both had personal best times in the 500 free. Junior Maggie He swam a personal best time in the 200IM. The 200 Medley Relay team of Bax, Leppert, Cure and Massetti finished seventh with a time of 2:03.70.

The Indians finished fifth with 139 points behind Sectional Team Champion Boylan, Belvidere Co-op, Byron and Sterling.

The IHSA State Meet is Friday and Saturday at Evanston High School. The Indians are coached by Brian McGuire and Paige Young. The divers are coached by Gary Wright Sr.
