The Durand lady Bulldogs found themselves in a tough spot when they played host to the Orangeville Broncos on Jan. 8. Orangeville came into the game with a record of 15-3, and they were fresh off a tough loss to the Galena Pirates.

The Broncos were looking to get back on track when they made the short trip to Durand. The Bulldogs were also coming off a loss. They fell to River Ridge-Scales Mound 62-19 on Jan. 6. At that point, it was one of their worst losses of the season, dropping their record to 6-9 on the year.

Things weren’t getting any easier when they returned home to play host to the Broncos, just two days later. River Ridge-Scales Mound and Orangeville have combined for more than 30 victories, early in the season. Last week’s stretch was arguably the toughest part of the 2024-25 schedule for Durand.

Orangeville made quick work of the Bulldogs. By the end of the first quarter, Orangeville had already tallied 21 points. That’s just three points shy of the 24 total points Durand had after four quarters of play.

Most of Durand’s success came in the fourth quarter, when a couple of three-pointers helped to wake up the crowd. Audrina Whipple and Caitlind Maines each hit three-pointers in the final quarter. Maines scored five of Durand’s eight fourth-quarter points.

Micayla Peterson hit a pair of three-pointers on the evening, one in the second quarter and one in the third. Madison Moore drained a first quarter three, but those were the only points of the opening quarter for Durand. The Bulldogs combined for five threes in the game.

Peterson led Durand in scoring with seven points. Maines was next up with five, and Olivia Johnson had four, all of which came in the second quarter. Aurora Hilton led the team with eight rebounds. Durand fell by a final score of 64-24.

The Bulldogs went on to drop their next game against West Carroll by a score of 47-37. That was their third consecutive loss, dropping their record to 6-11 on the year. Durand returns home on Thursday, Jan. 16 to play host to another solid team in the 10-7 Dakota Indians. That game is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
