Eagle Scout project creates mini food pantry; Neighborhood box makes food accessible to those in need
For his Eagle Project, Pecatonica High School senior Joshua Salamon of Troop 1 Pecatonica has built and installed a “Little Free Food Pantry” in front of the Pecatonica United Methodist Church, located at 528 N. Washington St. The project was his big step to becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
Similar to a “Little Free Library,” the food pantry is stocked with non-perishable food and hygiene items. It is intended for any community member in need to take – as many items as needed. In turn, community members are asked in turn to contribute food and hygiene items as they are able to help keep the pantry stocked.
This pantry is intended to be available all times, convenient at hours when community food pantries are not open, and allow individuals to privately take or contribute.
By allowing community members to take what they need, or leave what they can, the mini pantry is truly a community-centric, convenient endeavor.
