Ed Manley passed away Dec. 28 at age 85. He was born July 17, 1931, to Lyle T. and Edna H. Manley of Rockton, Ill. In 1955, Ed married the love of his life, Jeanne Caldwell Manley of Madison, Wis. He had a 25-year career in the silica sand business, culminating as the Executive VP of Manley Brothers Sand Company.

Ed grew up in Rockton, Ill. and attended Hononegah High School, where he was class President. He went on to receive a B.S. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from Northwestern University, while participating actively in the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

Ed and Jeanne met at the University of Wisconsin and married in Madison. They began their married life in Chicago and lived in Rockford, Ill., Munster, Ind., and Lake Mills, Wis. Ed’s passions over the years included golden retrievers, following the Badgers and the Chicago Bears, dancing, and attending jazz performances in Chicago and Madison.

Surviving Ed are his beloved wife of 61 years, Jeanne; and his three adult children Philip Manley (Laura Pennington) of Lake Mills, Wis.; Carolyn Manley McCarter of Flint, Mich., and Paula Manley (Todd Samusson) of Portland, Ore. Grandchildren are: Michael, John, Thomas, and Sarah McCarter; and Tanner and Alexandra Manley. Cousins include: Sandra Manley of New York City; Pat Hopkins of Rockton, Ill.; John Hopkins of Lancaster, Wis.; Becky Hoffman of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; Sarah Winter from Roscoe, Ill.; and Mary Lynn Richardson from Rockton, Ill. 

A memorial service to celebrate Ed’s life took place Jan. 3 at First Congregational UCC Church, 307 W. Madison St., Lake Mills, Wis. Visitation was at 10 a.m. and the Service was at 11 a.m. Lunch followed in Seward Hall (lower level of the church). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Jefferson County or the First Congregational UCC Church of Lake Mills, Wis.
