Belvidere Police Deputy Chief Matt Wallace and Officer Tim Blankenship work with VIPS to sort the food donated over the past few weeks for the Feed the Need initiative.

The Belvidere Police Department and their volunteers have been out on weekends collecting food for their Feed the Need program in Boone County.

“We collected a lot of food and cash,” said Deputy Chief Matt Wallace of the Belvidere Police Department. “Our Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) spent hours sorting the food for delivery. All of the food was donated to the following locations: First Presbyterian Church in Belvidere, B1 Assembly of God, Empower Boone and the Veterans Administration.

“Officer Tim Blankenship, our Community Policing coordinator, spearheaded the Feed the Need program and over the last four weekends, police VIPs have been out to three locations to collect food and donations for the less fortunate in Boone County. Depending on the day, they could be found at Aldi, Kune’s or Fiesta Market.

“This is our ninth year of collecting for Feed the Need and Nov. 19 was our first day of collecting. This is our opportunity to give back to the community. I am humbled by the Belvidere community and their generosity. I think we overwhelmed the food pantries when we distributed it on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

“The Belvidere Police Department and the VIPS donated all of the food from the Feed the Need Drive for 2021. Thanks to the generosity of the Belvidere Community we were able to give tons of food to local churches, food pantries, and the local Veterans Administration.

“We would like to specifically recognize the following businesses and individuals for their generosity:

Franklin Display Group; Belvidere Cosmo Charities, Belvidere Officers Association, Aldi USA, Fiesta Market, General Mills-Green Giant, R & D Thiel, Inc., officers of the Belvidere Police Department and Alderman Dan Snow.

“Again the BPD is thankful for the support of the community and the dedication of the VIPS, and Officer Tim Blankenship. Franklin Wire was generous enough to supply storage for the food we collected over the last few weeks and allow us to sort the food for distribution.

Anyone still wishing to assist with Feed the Need can call Officer Tim Blankenship at the Belvidere Police Department, 815-544-9626.
