The Wall of Fame at Harlem High School has been honoring athletes for the past 91 years.
First to be recognized were Harold Schoonover and Harry Schoonover, both for track, in 1926. The first female inductee was softball player Sandy Reed, in 1975.
The first boys team so recognized was in 1929-30, for basketball. For the girls it was the 1979 softball team.
Over that period of time 176 young men and women and 61 teams have been added to the Wall.
The most recent induction ceremony, presided over by Harlem Athletic Director Kurt Weigt, was the 29th in school history. “Harlem High School is proud to honor the following for their achieve-ments and contributions to the history of the ‘Huskie’ athletic programs,” he said.
First up was the 2011 girls state championship bowling team that included the following: sophomore Lindsey Anderson, senior Alyssa Arle, sophomore Danielle Broege, junior Samantha (Sammi) Hagerman, junior K’Lynn Lawver, senior Caitlin Sabin and senior Angela Washington.
The championship effort was led by Hagerman who recorded a 12-game series of 2,588 pins. That’s an average of 216 per game. That series ranked sixth among 81 bowlers. It was two pins out of fifth place and six pins out of fourth place.
She was followed by An-derson, just three pins behind with a 2,585; Sabin, with a 2,480; Washington, with a 2,456; and Lawver, with a 2,424.
Harlem had four bowlers in the Top 25 with Anderson in seventh; Sabin in 21st; and Washington in 24th.
This was the Lady Huskies fifth state championship since the first one was achieved in 2000. Others came in 2001, 2002 and 2005. They finished second in 2004.
The 2016-17 team is back at state this week, hoping to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish. Sophomore Becca Hagerman, sister of Sammi, is a member of this team.
