When my daughter was just a toddler I used to tell her stories at bedtime. The stories I told her were ones that I’d make up off the cuff. I’d use characters from other popular children’s stories and mix them together to form somewhat of a fractured fairy tale. She liked them nevertheless. There was one story that came to mind recently at Halloween, as it involved a Wicked Witch. I retold the story to my grandson when he came over that night with his parents. He loved it! I had to retell it several times to him before he left. I later heard from my daughter that he wanted her to tell it to him multiple times that night before he went to bed. That warmed this grandpa’s heart that I could pass along something to my grandson that my daughter also liked as a youngster.

As mentioned, the Wicked Witch is in the story. The characters of Little Bear and Frosty the Snowman also figure prominently in the tale. It goes as follows:

One night, after Little Bear’s parents had put him to bed, Little Bear was just about to fall asleep, when all of a sudden he heard a voice coming from his closet.

“Ah-ha-ha-ha! I’ve come to get you Little Bear!” (I would tell this part using my best Wicked Witch voice that I could.)

Little Bear knew it was the Wicked Witch. He froze with fear, but then quickly recovered, and pulled the covers over his head.

By this time the Wicked Witch had come from the closet and was walking slowly towards Little Bear’s bed. (I’d tell this part with my hands raised and fingers curled, imitating the moves of the Wicked Witch.)

It wasn’t looking good for Little Bear. The Wicked Witch was coming closer, and closer, and closer to him. When she got close enough she pulled the covers off of Little Bear.

“Now I’ve got you, Little Bear!” the Wicked Witch cackled.

Just as she reached out and was about to grab Little Bear, all of a sudden a snowball came out of nowhere and smacked the Wicked Witch upside her head. She began melting, as everyone knows snowballs are made of water, and water melts Wicked Witches.

“Ahhhhh, I’m melting! Meltiiiing!” the Witch cried. (Again said in the best Wicked Witch voice I could muster, all the while also pretending to melt like the witch did.)

Little Bear’s friend Frosty the Snowman had showed up just in time to save him from the clutches of the Wicked Witch.

Little Bear was then able to get a good night’s sleep, knowing the Wicked Witch was gone, and that Frosty was there to protect him.

The End.
