Get Holiday Support at North Suburban Library
By Linda Blair, NSLD PUBLIC RELATIONS
Holiday preparations can be a hectic and stressful time. Let your public Library assist you during this holiday season. Here are some ways to help you relax and enjoy the holidays from North Suburban Library District.
Shop
NSLD offers some great opportunities to shop at the Library – with no traffic or crowds! You can shop the used book sales at either Library location which offers a great selection of gently used books and DVDs. “Wrap” your book sale purchase in a special edition NSLD book bag; a great gift idea for teachers or book lovers. Book sales are conveniently open during Library hours. You can also purchase an Adopt-a-Book in the name of your loved one. For a $20 donation, NSLD will add a new book to the Library’s collection book-plated with your gift recipient’s name. This idea can be a great annual tradition that keeps on giving for years to come. Library cards for non-residents that enjoy the NSLD locations can also be a very special gift. Gift certificates for non-resident cards are available at the Library for $100. Libraries offer great savings with access to best sellers, free Wifi, public computers, DVDs, music CDs, eBooks, magazines, newspapers and much more. Visit the NSLD website for more information on how to get a “non-resident” card and other available services (www.northsuburbanlibrary.org under “Services/Library Card”).
Unwind
Take a break and visit the “quiet” Library to get a few moments to relax. You can sit in a study room and make your to-do list, browse for books or music CDs to enjoy during the holidays, use the public computers to find recipes or gift ideas. Or just take a moment to RELAX and enjoy the newspaper or a popular magazine.
Participate
This time of the year is a good time to start “paying it forward” and participate in Library programs that provide community support. NSLD will have their annual mitten trees up at both locations. Drop off mittens, scarves or hats that will be distributed to those in need around the local community. You can also drop off items for the local food pantries. Sign-up for a Schnucks eScrip Community Card at either Library location and support your Library when purchasing groceries for holiday events. These annual funds help NSLD purchase additional services for the Library such as eMagazine and online reference databases.
Play
Visit the Library with your family and enjoy the Lego table or Fun Place in Children’s Services. Children’s Services offers fun crafts, puzzles and much more to keep the kids entertained. Check the NSLD website for the upcoming “Crafty Reader” days and be sure to sign-up for the Winter Reading Club starting Dec. 27. Teens and adults can also enjoy special activities at NSLD during the holiday season. Movies, book clubs and local history events are planned. Check NSLD’s Facebook page for special events for all ages. Be sure to check out some DVDs and books to enjoy at home.
Organize
Use NSLD’s online card catalog from home to get your book choices selected and placed on hold. Just pop by the Library and get your materials when ready. Students can also get homework help with many online reference databases that are available with your Library card. This information is not available by “googling” and can help get research projects completed quickly. Check out databases such as Magazine Article Index, Biography and Country Reports for help with classroom projects. You can access the databases from home or at the Library. For more information about NSLD’s databases, visit the website or ask at the Reference Desk.
Read
Treat yourself to a break and enjoy your favorite author. Your Librarians will be happy to give you reading suggestions. Not a book reader? Try our free eBooks or our eMagazine service, great for travelling around the holidays.
Thankful
Be sure to take time to appreciate the season. NSLD wishes to thank their local patrons and community supporters for their patience during the recent renovation at NSLD/Loves Park. The Library’s first floor renovation is complete. Be sure to stop by and visit. Next NSLD/Roscoe will be receiving a new expanded parking lot this year. NSLD thanks the community for their SUPPORT in 2016!
