ROCKFORD – The Harlem Huskies opened their 2015 NIC-10 campaign on the road by facing Guilford at Swanson Stadium on Aug. 28.
The Huskies got off to a fast start as junior quarterback Trent Wiley punched the ball in for two touchdowns and found senior wideout Kody Sprung for a 46-yard strike.
Senior Cody Paholski added another rushing touchdown and the Harlem was hitting on all cylinders with a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Guilford got on the board with a touchdown in the second quarter with the Huskies countering and at the break Harlem was in total control with a 27-7 lead.
As the third quarter got underway it was that feeling one gets after being up all night, having three cups of coffee in the morning and by 2:00 in the afternoon, the crash hits and hits hard.
Guilford came out and took control of the game, putting up 22 unanswered points and by end of the third quarter with the home crowd cheering on the Viking comeback, held a two-point lead, 29-22 over the visitors with a potential upset in the making.
Not wanting to fall in their season opener, the stunned Huskies regrouped and put up 12 points in the fourth quarter while shutting down the Guilford surge, holding them scoreless, and the Huskies went to 1-0 on the young season to take a share the NIC-10 lead with Belvidere, Hononegah, Belvidere North and Auburn.
Brenton Shaw led the Huskies with 139 all-purpose yards, 78 rushing, 20 pass receiving, 27 on kick returns and punt returns. Junior quarterback Trent Wiley was 10 for 21 in passing for 155 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Wiley also carried the ball eight times for six yards and two touchdowns. Senior Kody Sprung had three receptions for 89 yards with one touchdown catch.
The Huskies will host 0-1 Freeport, who fell to Hononegah 20-0, Sept. 4 at 7:15 p.m.
