With a mark of 2-0 and the fact that the State-ranked Boylan Titans fell this past week, the Hononegah Indians hold strong atop the NIC-10 standings.

Rockford Guilford became the latest victim to see how invasive the conference leading Indians defense was.

However, the Vikings did achieve acknowledged recognition, having scored one point more than rival Harlem could a week earlier.

Hononegah rolled to a 30-7 decision over Guilford and secured its position in maintaining a multi-team tie in the hunt for better late October position.

Indians’ defenders picked opposing passes apart and knocked away Guilford’s aerial offerings. For the Vikings, that meant scoring drives were snuffed out. Hononegah managed the win.

The week two match is one that many felt Hononegah could win, allowing them to put themselves in the position of co-hosting limited control in the larger school conference.

The consensus is the Indians are ready for a little stiffer competition and they will be in store for it this Friday night  as they play host to co-conference leading Freeport.

In their week two match against the Auburn Knights, the Pretzels showed discipline and focus as they worked their way to a 25-24 win.

Along with the fact that the Freeport offense measures on the upper half of the NIC-10 stat sheets, its team defense has given up just over 15 points a night.

Freeport, Hononegah and Belvidere North remain the three undefeated teams working into the second week of September in the NIC-10.

Following this Friday night’s knock-out featuring Freeport, Hononegah heads out on the road for game one on a two-game stretch.

The Sept. 17 cross-county get together with Rockford East opens the second trimester of play and skews statistically favorably towards Hononegah.

Some statisticians support a 4-0 opening to the 2021 football season for the Hononegah Indians. Others feel the team could possibly be looking at a chance to secure a position in the post-season by the conclusion of their week five appointment at Rockford Boylan.

In the indoor realm there is a lot of movement by the Lady Indians volleyball team as well. Another season sees Hononegah right at the top of the standings and riding waves of wins into mid-session settings.

The victories compiled as Hononegah took down Rockford Lutheran and the Belvidere Lady Bucs, then followed it up with back to back shut-outs of Auburn and Rockford Jefferson.

This week’s matches opened on Tuesday as Hononegah hosted Harlem with the Lady Huskies desperate to get things turned around following an 0-6 start to the season.

Before the week is up, Rockford Guilford gets the opportunity to face down the conference challenger as they invite Hononegah in for a Thursday game.

With momentum always key in seasonal success for the Lady Indians, conditioning seems to indicate the next week and a half of games will indicate whether or not the Lady Indians remain in control in the NIC-10.

Tuesday’s game at Freeport will be followed up by a quick host-over with Rockford East on Thursday, Sept. 16.

The following week, both Rockford Boylan and Belvidere North show up on Hononegah’s radar, with leadership in the NIC-10 at stake.
