When the IHSA Class 4A State Boys’ Basketball Playoffs began on Monday, Feb. 27, the Hononegah Indians didn’t have to worry about suiting up. Their opening round match didn’t tip-off until night two.
They did have to enter the post-season having to remember “one that got away” however. They could get a chance to get payback a little later this week to try to remedy that situation though.
The time off could be beneficial as the Indians entered the post-season following a loss to Rockford Auburn in the NIC-10 regular season finale. The Knights reigned in the Indians late and held on for the 51-48 decision.
Hononegah started fast and scored 15 points in the opening quarter. The Knights could not get shots lined up. The bounce wasn’t favorable as the attempts rimmed away too many times. A lot of things were going right for Hononegah.
Early, they took full ad-vantage with breakaway scores off crisp passes. After the first period it was a dou-ble-digit advantage for the home team.
They just couldn’t find the same type of success again. With the post-season underway, it can’t happen again or things close down for the winter.
Time was spent this past weekend looking at ways to make the necessary adjust-ments for a playoff run.
There was a change in momentum in the second quarter in the NIC-10 closer for Hononegah. Auburn’s quickness began to be re-warded as they scored well beyond their opening frame total.
The Knights won the period by four points and saw their deficit slip to just two shots back at the break, 24-18.
Auburn finished a game behind Hononegah in the NIC-10 this season. They were 11-5 on the year and 17-11 overall. They were a very good conference team this season.
