Hononegah Loss Puts Playoffs in Peril
By Chris Johnson, REPORTER
The post-season faces slippage for the Hononegah Indians following a 17-14 loss to the Harlem Huskies in their week eight NIC-10 battle. The loss pushed the Indians season mark to 4-4. Another loss will mean the playoffs won’t be reached. The playoff points, the total wins of all opponents faced; do appear to show potential for inclusion for Hononegah if they get their fifth win this Friday night against the Guilford Vikings. There is no choice left. The win is necessary. A win may not even guarantee the post-season. Hononegah has been controlling tempo in many of their wins this season. The line has been able to provide the bend needed, to allow playmakers to step in and perform. In recent weeks, Hononegah has run into teams that are already geared up for their post-season run and some who are still alive, even this week. Boylan and Auburn are already in. Both teams carry marks of 7-1 heading into the week nine games.
Both the Titans and Knights are aware that a loss could cost them a Conference crown this year. Just one more win means the NIC-10 Title is theirs. They don’t have to worry about the playoffs though. Harlem, with their three-point win over Hononegah is in. Their sixth win gives them that distinction. Three teams battle this weekend to see if they will get an invitation to the State Tournament which begins Oct. 28. Hononegah, Belvidere and Belvidere North are all 4-4. They have a shot to get in with a win this Friday.
If the Indians win over Guilford this Friday night and still fail to have enough points to get an at-large bid, they will have to look back at their week seven historic loss to the Jefferson J-Hawks 21-20, sandwiched between losses to Auburn and Harlem. A rough three-game stretch could be survived with a win and an invite this Friday.
For the Harlem Huskies, the win means the playoffs are theirs. The sixth win gives them the chance to take a shot at a home game in the first round when the playoffs begin next Friday. The regular season closes this Friday, Oct. 21. The Huskies take on Jefferson this Friday night as the 2016 regular season comes to a close.
